Politics of the United States

The two largest political parties in the United States are the United States Republican Party and the United States Democratic Party. The Republicans are generally called "conservative" and the Democrats "liberal."

There are many smaller parties and pressure groups which, for the most part, fall into four categories: the social democratic left, the far left, the far right, and parties following the American definition of libertarianism. Only a few minor parties participate in elections, and even fewer achieve significant electoral success.
